When Therapy Gets Real: How to Take Care of Yourself After
Therapy can be a really helpful pause in your week to process feelings and experiences. Finding a therapist you vibe with can make that process feel all the more safe and rewarding.
Effects of a Therapy Session
Sometimes the more vulnerable conversations can leave teens and young adults feeling overwhelmed, exposed, or just a little “off” after a session. Tough conversations aren’t a bad thing (we need them for growth!), but knowing how to take care of yourself afterward is just as important.
How to Handle a Hard Therapy Session
Having a simple plan for after your session can make a big difference. Here are a few ways to handle the heavier therapy days:
Take a minute to breathe.
Don’t rush straight to your next appointment or activity. Sit for a few minutes, put your phone down, and focus on slow, intentional breaths to help your body settle.
2. Write it out.
Journal or jot down a few thoughts in your notes app. Getting things out of your head and onto paper can help organize your thoughts and calm your mind. You can share these thoughts with your therapist at your next session if you think it might be helpful.
3. Move your body.
Go for a walk, hit the gym, or dance it out to your favorite song. Movement can help release tension and shift your mood.
4. Give yourself space.
This is a more proactive suggestion, but try not to over-schedule on therapy days. Some sessions hit harder than others, and having time to rest and reflect can make a big difference. Having a little space in your day before and after a session can be helpful.
5. Ground yourself.
Do something simple and sensory. Step outside, drink something cold, or focus on what you can see and feel around you. Grounding exercises can help bring you back to the present moment.
How to Deal with Feeling Overwhelmed after Therapy
Therapy is hard work, and it’s completely normal to feel emotional afterward. If sessions are leaving you feeling too overwhelmed, bring it up with your therapist. They can help adjust the pace, build in time to regulate, and offer strategies that are tailored to your needs.
